Survival

Well it is over.  I survived the first semester of dental school, not to mention the longest finals week I think I have ever had.   6 finals in a row, one a day since last Thursday.  I would take a test in the morning and then spend essentially the rest of the day and evening studying for the next test just to wake up the next day and do it all again.  But I made it, and I did pretty well on all of them I think.  Here's to being 1/8th a dentist.

Also here are some more of the pics from pre-clinic.  Thought people might like to see them.  Click on the images to have them open bigger so you can see better.

Some stone models of impressions that I mounted on an articulator.  In the back is our typodont (pink teeth model) that we put int he mannequin heads to practice doing fillings etc. (Actually this picture shows the amalgam and composite fillings pretty good too, on the left by the blue pill case.)

I think these were some composite fillings I did.  The flash on the camera washed out everything.

These are a handful of amalgam fillings that I did as well.  It is a little blurry and so hard to see.

Two more composites that are hard to see because they blend right into the tooth I am holding.

These are the acrylic provisional crowns I did.  The first one is a 2 unit crown and implant.  You can see that one part fits on an existing tooth, and the other would fit onto an implant post where the patient was missing a tooth.

This one is a single provisional crown in acrylic.  I really liked how this one turned out, but the picture is too blurry to really see the fine details.

Well now that the semester is done, we are just getting ready to fly back home for Christmas.  We are both excited to have a break for a few weeks and to see family.  See you all soon, and for those we won't see, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

So, Matt, not trying to show my ignorance, but what exactly is a dental cavity? Is it a place where acid (like from sugar) has eaten through the enamel? Why does it turn brown? I have had dentists talk about a "soft spot, but not a cavity yet" Are you enough of a dentis yet to explain that? LOL Sue

Yeah I had to get a root canal, but its bad enough that he has to get in more than one appointment to clean it out. So the first appointment he said he cleaned all the infected material out of the tooth, and gave a temporary filling, then scheduled another appointment for the 27th. He has me doing a week of amoxycillin. I got the work done on tuesday, but today it started hurting again, it feels the same as it did before. It had been feeling sore from having the clamp mooshed into the gums. But now it seems like that deep, bone pain has returned. Is that normal? do you even know yet?

The root canal got finished up today and I'm the proud owner of a brand new crown! Kristen says BOO on amalgam fillings.
